Feng Shui: Ancient Wisdom Travels West

Good evening, class,

This unit was sort of unusual to me. Truth be told, I found the whole concept of feng shui to be quite dull. Even though we read about many instances where feng shui has been allegedly successful, and it is practiced in many countries, to me, it is still merely superstition. In my opinion, many of the principles of feng shui are no more than logical things I had already thought of. That is, feng shi, in a certain way, is not really needed provided that you are a thinking human being and can come up with its basis.

I see feng shui as something similar to a religion where you are only required to believe in it, to have faith or the like. I am not a superstitious person in the least, so it becomes even harder for me to grasp the whole concept of feng shui, or rather, to even think of applying some of the principles that I have not already thought of.

On the other hand, I do understand that feng shui is not regarded as a fad, for it has been around for thousands of years. It is seen as something very serious that needs lots of study for you to be qualified to teach it. I was reading a little bit more about it and I read that it was reserved for Chinese emperors. They explained that feng shui masters at that time knew that they could make money by selling the “philosophy” to regular folk. They knew that they could be killed because of this, so they supposedly wrote a fake book for the general population. Unfortunately, these bogus or not so compelling theories have carried on and still exist. Here we have a few examples:
  1. Change the entrance to the house because it had a straight path. Energy can't travel in a straight line, so it would not reach the house.
  2. Get rid of the security bars on doors and windows because the "element metal" should not be present at the entrance according to the "chart". Whatever that is.
  3. You should not buy used furniture anymore as you can't know what kind of energy they could bring from past owners.
  4. Change the kitchen because it is white. Being the kitchen a "point of fire" and white represents metal. Metal melts with fire.
  5. Get rid of the mirror because it faces the bathroom mirror, and the energy bounces and could cause accidents.
  6. Get rid of the bed because it was inherited from your grandma and she had died of a painful disease.
As you can see, many of these theories are somewhat stupid and even funny. Personally, I would not even think of following such ideas.

I believe that maybe the problem here is that people figure that if they read some books on the subject, they will know what this is all about, but there is too much more to feng shui than they believe. According to what I read, feng shui is so precise in calculations that unless you have had massive training with a master, you are probably not doing much for yourself, or even worsening situations.

As I mentioned earlier, a lot of feng shui makes a lot of sense; this is precisely why I brought up the fact that it just seems too logical to me, and that I had thought of these ideas on my own. Due to the lack of information and maybe because of how lightly the subject has been taken in the article we read in class, I shall give it the benefit of the doubt. I was able to gather a lot of information, even though it is not enough, and feng shui is highly respected by many people, especially Chinese business people, as we read in the book, and they would not even think of setting up a shop without a master’s advice.

I invite you to read more on the subject so you can have a broader idea of the whole concept because what is provided in the book would not possibly be enough for us to grasp what feng shui is really all about.
